Basil is a delicious aromatic herb of the mint (Lamiaceae) family. A staple of Italian cooking, it’s delicious chopped on just about everything. Basil loves heat and is most reliably available in early summer.
Most of our basil production is dedicated to common Italian basil — the type used in pestos and caprese salad. We also grow Thai basil, which is delicious in curries. And Tulsi basil — also known as Holy basil — which is considered sacred in India and is prized for its medicinal and spiritual uses. Tulsi basil can be used in cooking, but it is also commonly used to make tea and is reputed to help with a wide range of physical ailments.
Storage: Basil leaves do not like to be wet. Ideal storage is in a glass of water on a countertop.
