HOW DOES IT WORK?
Each week, we will deliver pre-packed boxes of freshly harvested produce to one of our designated drop sites. Just show up, sign your name, and take your box. To keep our costs down and prevent unnecessary waste, we ask that you hold the boxes and return them to us the following week so we can reuse them. The first CSA delivery of 2016 will be June 16.
WHAT’S IN THE BOX?
Whatever is in season! In early summer, that means lots of greens, chard, lettuce and radish. When August rolls around we’ll have heirloom tomatoes, peppers and zuchinni. Fall brings kale, carrots, potatoes and winter squash. Each week we’ll provide 8-10 different vegetables that we estimate can feed a family of four. We do our best to provide a range of produce, including familiar staples. But food should excite us too, so expect to find some less common surprises in there too, like kohlrabi and celeriac. Don’t know what to do with celeriac? Don’t worry. In advance of delivery we’ll send you an email so you know what to expect along with recipes to try out.
HOW DO I GET IT?
Unlike some CSAs that ask members to come pick up their shares from the farm, we bring our shares to you. Boxes are delivered each week to sites in the Hartford area. For a full list of current locations, click here. Want us to deliver somewhere else? Email us.
WHY SHOULD I JOIN?
Our members enjoy fresh, local, sustainably grown, certified organic vegetables. They help protect the earth from environmentally destructive practices and keep our food dollars in the community. Members can rest assured the food they eat contains no chemicals or synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. By joining the CSA, you become our partners in keeping it that way, while joining with a community of farmers and eaters committed to great food and and a healthier environment.
IS YOUR FARM ORGANIC?
Yes! As of 2015, we are certified organic by Baystate Organic Certifiers. Check out our certificate here.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
At Root Down Farm, we believe that sustainably raised, nutritious food should be accessible to everyone. We offer CSA shares on a sliding scale from $450 to $750. Our target price is $600, but if that’s a stretch, members can pay as little as $450 for a share. If you are able to pay more to help us subsidize shares for low-income members, we thank you in advance.
WHAT IF I’M BUSY AND CAN’T PICK UP MY SHARE?
No problem. You’re welcome to have friends or family pick up your share. Just have them present your name when they arrive. If no one is going to claim a box in a given week, please email us in advance. Any unclaimed boxes will be donated to a local food bank.
SOUNDS GREAT, HOW DO I SIGN UP?
It’s easy. All our sign ups are managed online. Members have the option to pay by credit card, through PayPal, with an online check, or print out an invoice and mail us a check in the mail. Please note: Members that wish to pay less than the $600 recommended price MUST pay by invoice. Sliding scale members are asked to pay whatever they can, but no less than $450. This option is available to low-income members only.
